Avon Road, Pymble - Proposed raised pedestrian (wombat) crossing

In short

CONSULTATION NOW CLOSED

Ku-ring-gai Council is currently seeking community feedback on an updated proposal to build a raised pedestrian (wombat) crossing on Avon Road, Pymble. The new proposed location is to the south of Gate 3 at Pymble Ladies' College.

Background

There is currently no pedestrian crossing to access Pymble Ladies' College (PLC) via Gate 3, which is one of the main entry points for students and staff.

Pedestrian counts undertaken in July 2025 showed a significant number of pedestrians crossing Avon Road in the vicinity of Gate 3 during school drop-off and pick-up times. Traffic volumes on Avon Road are heavy during these times, making it difficult for pedestrians to safely cross the road.

In late 2025 Council consulted with the community about a proposal to construct a raised pedestrian (wombat) crossing to the north of Gate 3. Feedback included concerns about the loss of on-street parking, and conflict between vehicles and pedestrians at this location. Additional concerns were raised that some parents were illegally parking in the part-time ‘No Stopping’ zones opposite Gate 3 to drop-off or pick-up children. However, Council staff observed that such instances were rare.

The location of the proposed crossing has now been updated based both on the above feedback and additional pedestrian counts undertaken in March 2026.

Stage 2 consultation: the current proposal

The raised pedestrian crossing is now proposed to be to the south of Gate 3, rather than to the north. The southern location would reduce interactions between pedestrians and vehicles as traffic volume is lower - most traffic turns left into and exits right from Gate 3 during school morning and afternoon peak times. The proposed crossing would be located next to the existing pedestrian access into PLC, and works would include an upgrade of the street lighting to meet current standards for a pedestrian crossing.

The proposed changes would result in the loss of the following 6 parking spaces on Avon Rd:

  • 3 full-time on-street parking spaces along the PLC frontage
  • 3 part-time on-street parking spaces on the residential side

This is less than the 9 parking spaces that would have been lost at the previously proposed location.
