About the site

4 Pennant Avenue, Gordon, also known as the former Gordon Bowling Club site, is located to the west of the Pacific Highway between Bushlands Avenue and Cecil Street, Gordon and is about a 700 metre walk from Gordon rail station.

The land is owned by Council and was previously leased to the Gordon Bowling Club who had occupied the site since 1953. The Club vacated the site in early 2018, since that time the site has remained vacant.

In April 2024 Council resolved to retain the site as Public Open Space, converting it to a new park and recreation area. When complete the new park will have an area of approximately 1.28ha. View the Council resolution

What is public open space

Public Open Space is:

  • Accessible to everyone
  • Can have a variety of uses
  • Can include passive and active recreation

It is publicly owned and managed by local, State or Federal government and is accessible to the public.

We are seeking community feedback to develop a plan for how to best use the site to provide the most benefit to the community. A mix of facilities will be considered to cater for both active and passive recreation.

What’s happened at similar sites

These examples show the range of possibilities for the future, like playgrounds, community gardens, event spaces, community centers, and sports facilities - all keeping their recreational use while serving local needs.

What Council is seeking from you now

Phase 1 Engagement (August 1-29, 2025) focuses on gathering:

  • Community ideas and wants - Your vision for how this valuable green space should be designed and used for generations to come
  • Local site knowledge - Insights that would affect use and design, including understanding of local conditions, usage patterns, and community needs
  • Social history perspectives - Stories and memories from locals about the site and surrounding area that could inform the design process

Why your input matters

This is an important opportunity to influence how this valuable green space will be designed and used. The site will serve the community for generations to come and we are committed to developing a plan that provides the most benefit to the community through a thoughtful mix of facilities catering to diverse recreational needs.

The engagement process is designed to ensure multiple opportunities for community input at different stages of planning, from initial concept development through to final masterplan exhibition, ensuring the final design truly reflects community needs and aspirations.

Challenges to consider when providing feedback

Future plans for the site must consider:

  • Environmental Protection: Part of the site will stay as natural open space to protect native plants and wildlife
  • Safety and Security: Limited visibility from surrounding homes may create safety concerns
  • Access and Parking: Only one entrance on Pennant Avenue with parking nearly full, plus a walking path to Bushlands Avenue
  • Ground Conditions: Soil contamination restricts digging and earthworks
  • Stormwater Management: Development must handle water runoff to protect neighboring properties from flooding

These factors will shape how the former bowling club site can be redeveloped while protecting the environment and community.
