Reviewing the Ku-ring-gai Heritage Strategy

In short

Council is reviewing the Ku-ring-gai Heritage Strategy 2021. The review is taking place at a time when changes to NSW Government planning policy are allowing more housing in the Ku-ring-gai local government area.

We want to hear your thoughts on how heritage can be managed and shared into the future.

This is the first of two phases of community engagement. Right now we are gathering high-level ideas to inform the update of the Strategy. The revised Heritage Strategy will then go on public exhibition in 2027, giving you a second chance to comment.

How to have your say

Complete our online survey. Printed surveys are also available at Council’s customer service centre, 818 Pacific Highway, Gordon. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

Online surveys close midnight Sunday 15 November 2026. Completed paper surveys must be left in the drop box at the centre by 5pm Friday 13 November 2026.

You can also provide written comments via the submissions function on this page.

Please note that written comments during this first phase of engagement will be used to shape the updated Heritage Strategy. We will not be responding individually, or to any matters relating to specific properties or locations.

Feedback closes 15 November 2026.

Background information

What is heritage?

Heritage is what we have inherited from the past and want to pass on to future generations, from First Nations and other cultures. It includes places and objects, houses, public and commercial buildings, parks and monuments.

About the Heritage Strategy

The Ku-ring-gai Heritage Strategy was prepared in 2021. It helps Council measure, plan and report on how heritage is managed across the local government area. Council identifies and protects heritage under NSW legislation and planning instruments, including the Ku-ring-gai Local Environmental Plan 2015, which lists heritage items and heritage conservation areas.

The Strategy includes an Action Plan which covers four themes:

  1. Identifying and documenting heritage, including updating inventory sheets and commissioning new heritage studies.

  2. Protecting heritage, including reviewing the heritage controls in the Development Control Plan and caring for Council-owned heritage places.

  3. Supporting heritage owners and managers, including providing Heritage Home Grants and online case studies that explain heritage conservation practices.

  4. Heritage education and promotion.

You can read the 2021 strategy here.

Share your ideas

We will be updating the Heritage Strategy 2021 to reflect what matters to our community today, including how heritage is protected as NSW Government housing policy changes.

At this stage we are looking for high-level feedback on the strategy and on heritage matters generally. Our survey includes questions on how important heritage is to you, your heritage priorities and whether you'd like to hear more about heritage in the area. Your ideas and priorities will help shape the draft updated Heritage Strategy.

Please note that this isn’t the place to raise issues about individual properties or locations. For advice about matters specific to your property, we recommend consulting a qualified heritage consultant.
