Why is a change being considered?
Council has received a petition from residents with driveway access on Khartoum Lane asking that the lane to be made one-way eastbound. Concerns have been raised about conflict between vehicles entering and exiting Khartoum Lane at the intersection with Rosedale Road, as the eastern end of Khartoum Lane is only wide enough for one vehicle.
Traffic counts recently undertaken in Khartoum Lane showed that over 85% of vehicles travelled eastbound along the lane. Traffic volumes were very low, which would indicate that the lane is predominantly used by residents with garage access in the lane.
What is being considered?
In order to minimise conflict between vehicles at the eastern end of Khartoum Lane, Council is considering the following 2 options:
Option A) Introduce One-Way traffic flow eastbound in Khartoum Lane - This would mean that all traffic in the lane would need to enter from Werona Avenue and exit via Rosedale Road.
Option B) Introduce ‘No Entry’ into Khartoum Lane at Rosedale Road - This would mean that all traffic would need to enter the lane from Werona Avenue, but residents would be able to exit the lane at either end.

What could happen in the future?
As you may be aware, the State Government has nominated Gordon as one of its Transport Oriented Developments precincts. This could result in new higher density housing in Khartoum Lane in the future. If this were to occur, there is some likelihood that the lane would be widened to accommodate opposing vehicles.
