Eastern Road Turramurra - traffic calming and raised pedestrian crossing

Project Overview

Council is considering the introduction of a 40km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area along Eastern Road in Turramurra, extending from The Chase Road to Alice Street. This proposal forms part of the broader shopping centre enhancement project currently in development.

Following extensive community consultation, the previously proposed roundabout has been replaced with a raised wombat crossing to be located north of Chilton Parade. This change directly responds to community concerns raised during earlier engagement sessions.

As we work toward finalising the design for the Eastern Road shopping centre upgrades, we're inviting local residents to provide their input on this important traffic management component. Your feedback will help shape the final proposal.

We encourage you to review the details below and share your thoughts by participating in our community survey.

Consultation closes Friday 4 July at 5pm

Project information

Following community feedback on the 2022 proposal for upgrading the shopping centre at Eastern Road, Council addressed concerns about removing angle parking by restructuring the project to preserve existing parking while implementing traffic calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds.

The expanded project included a High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) with two roundabouts, a raised pedestrian crossing, and a 40km/h speed limit on Eastern Road near the centre. Community consultation revealed strong opposition to the proposed roundabout at Eastern Road and Chilton Parade.

Updated design

The plan has been modified to remove the Chilton Parade roundabout. Instead, a raised wombat crossing will be installed on Eastern Road north of Chilton Parade, along with HPAA entry treatments including kerb blisters and signage. These changes are shown in the accompanying Plan Eastern Rd HPAA Entry.

Community-responsive approach

Community feedback highlighted strong resistance to the proposed roundabout. Council has adopted a different approach using proven traffic calming techniques that achieve the same safety objectives while addressing resident and business concerns.

Traffic solutions

The revised proposal includes:

  • A raised wombat crossing on Eastern Road north of Chilton Parade for safe pedestrian access while naturally reducing vehicle speeds

  • Entry treatments with kerb blisters and signage to mark the 40km/h HPAA boundary and encourage speed compliance

  • Retention of existing road configuration to minimise traffic disruption

These measures create a comprehensive speed management system that responds to community preferences while maintaining core safety objectives.

What will happen in the future?

Feedback from this process will be analysed and reported to the Ku-ring-gai Traffic Committee for a decision. This element of the project will then be considered as part of the wider Eastern Road centre upgrade.
