Project background
Council has received complaints about right turning vehicles on Stanhope Road causing extensive queuing and delays for left turning vehicles during peak morning and afternoon periods.
Observations by Council staff have found that it is extremely difficult to turn right from Stanhope Road during peak periods. Between 7.50am and 8.20am on Thursday 13 August, only 2 vehicles turned right onto the Pacific Highway from Stanhope Road. One of these vehicles illegally turned right in front of vehicles waiting to turn right into Stanhope Road. Both vehicles caused extensive delays and queuing for traffic waiting to turn left onto Pacific Highway.
Proposed changes
Introduce ‘No Right Turn 6am-10am, 3pm-7pm Mon-Fri’ restrictions on Stanhope Road at Pacific Highway, as shown in the concept plan below.
Due to the low number of vehicles that turn right from Stanhope Road at these times, the proposed changes will have a minimal impact on the surrounding road network. Traffic can safely turn right onto Pacific Highway from the signalised intersection at Lorne Avenue.
